What Can ChatGPT and Claude Do With Gmail?

Once you enable the ChatGPT Gmail integration or connect Claude to Gmail, you can take advantage of many useful actions to manage your email. Here are some common scenarios and sample prompts.

Summarize a recent important email or lengthy conversation. This is a huge time saver for project-related threads, reports, explanations, or back-and-forth conversations.

Sample: “Summarize the important emails I received today.”

Find an old email, receipt, or order. Rather than searching in Gmail for the correct message, you can use AI to locate it faster. Both ChatGPT and Claude can search for archived emails as well.

Sample: “Find the latest email about my order from [company].”

Draft a reply when you’re in a hurry or need help with wording or tone. You can tell AI what you want to include and if you want the language casual or more professional.

Sample: “Draft a reply to the last email from [person].”

Identify emails that need attention like actions or replies. This is helpful when you have a packed inbox and need to find messages requiring action.

Sample: “Show me emails from this week that probably need a reply.”

You can also use ChatGPT or Claude to help triage your recent emails, label messages for organization, and view subscriptions or promotions.

While you can use both tools for a basic cleanup, neither is intended for ongoing volume-heavy mailbox cleaning. For example, they don’t provide workflows for recurring cleanup rules or ongoing clutter prevention.

Gmail Connection Not Working? Troubleshooting

If you run into problems initiating a Gmail connection or when making a request, there are several common issues and solutions.

For instance, if you’re trying to connect multiple Gmail accounts, this is supported by ChatGPT, but not currently by Claude. Or, if you’re concerned about accidental sending, you can adjust the approval permissions in the settings.

Problem What to try
ChatGPT says Gmail is connected but disabled Retry the request; reconnect Gmail if the issue persists
ChatGPT requested task doesn't use Gmail Write “Use Gmail to…” explicitly in the request or use the plus sign to select Gmail before typing the request
Claude login finishes but connection isn't saved Disconnect and reconnect
Claude: “The caller does not have permission” Remove the Google connection and reconnect
Claude: “Precondition check failed” Check whether that Google account actually has a Gmail mailbox
Work account blocks the connection Google Workspace admin may need to mark the app as Trusted
Desktop app fails but web works Check antivirus HTTPS scanning

Can ChatGPT or Claude Clean Up Gmail?

As mentioned earlier, neither ChatGPT nor Claude are designed for large-scale cleaning tasks. They can help with AI-assisted cleaning such as labeling, archiving, moving to Trash, and marking Spam. ChatGPT can also perform scheduled inbox reviews that can assist you with cleaning.

If you have a heavily cluttered mailbox, both tools can identify high-volume senders, list subscriptions, and offer up emails suitable for cleanup. However, dedicated AI email cleanup tools can provide more powerful bulk actions, cleaning suggestions, and recurring cleanup rules that take care of ongoing clutter.

Clean Your Inbox With Clean Email

Clean Email gives ChatGPT and Claude tools built for clearing a crowded inbox and keeping it clean. Connect it to the assistant you already use, then describe what you want to sort out. You can archive or move thousands of messages to Trash, manage subscriptions, and set up ongoing cleanup without working through each sender yourself.

Not sure where to start? Ask your assistant to review your biggest senders and Cleaning Suggestions. It can explain which groups are taking up space and help you choose what to keep, archive, or remove.

For example, try:

“Use Clean Email to find old promotional emails I could clear out. Show me the senders and message counts before making any changes.”

You can also use the connection to:

This works with mailboxes already connected to Clean Email, including Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and iCloud. If your email is spread across several providers, you can ask for help with each connected account from the same chat.

Before a cleanup or settings change, your assistant shows what it will affect and asks for your approval. The Clean Email connection cannot send emails or permanently delete them; removal sends messages to Trash, where your email provider’s retention rules apply. Clean Email does not store or index email bodies, but the connection can provide access to message content.

To get started, add your mailbox to Clean Email and follow our guide to connecting Clean Email to your AI assistant.

What About Gemini in Gmail?

Google Gemini is Gmail’s built-in AI tool. It can help you perform simple actions like summarizing conversations, drafting messages, and searching for emails; however, it is more limited in its capabilities than other AI tools. But if you prefer the convenience of an AI assistant directly in your inbox, learn more about how to use AI in Gmail with Gemini as a handy option.

“ChatGPT for Gmail” Extensions vs the Official Gmail Plugin

As you read the instructions, descriptions, and features listed here regarding ChatGPT for Gmail, it’s important to know that these apply to OpenAI’s official Gmail integration.

You may see third-party browser extensions with varying ChatGPT + Gmail names. However, these typically reside within Gmail’s interface or Compose window to help you create messages whereas the OpenAI plugin lives within ChatGPT and provides additional functions.

Privacy, Permissions, and Disconnecting Gmail

Privacy is always a concern when connecting an external tool to your inbox. Here are just a few of the basics you should know about ChatGPT and Claude with Gmail.

Inbox monitoring: Neither tool continuously monitors your Inbox; each only accesses your Gmail when you request a task. If you use ChatGPT for a regularly-scheduled inbox review, it accesses your Gmail when the task runs based on the schedule you set up.

Model training: Whether or not your content can be used for model training and improvement depends on the product, plan, and your settings.

Action approvals: By default, each tool requests confirmation from you before sending or deleting emails. Both tools allow you to select and/or modify which actions require approvals.

Disconnecting: If you want to disconnect Gmail from ChatGPT or Claude, you can do so at any time.

In Gmail, go to your Google Security & Sign-In page, choose the tool under Your linked apps, and pick Delete all to remove all links and stop sharing.
