Is It Safe to Connect ChatGPT or Claude to Gmail?
When you connect ChatGPT or Claude to Gmail, you’re asked to grant permission via OAuth. This means that you’re not handing over your Google password directly, but you are authorizing the tool to access specific data and perform actions on your behalf.
Depending on the AI assistant email access capabilities you grant, this does come with some meaningful risks that you should be aware of:
- Broad mailbox access
- Indirect prompt injection
- Unintended actions
- Limited reversibility of some autonomous actions
- Uncertainty about what data has already been processed once access is revoked
We’ll walk through these risks below, but first, you should learn what ChatGPT and Claude can see and do once connected to your Gmail account.
What Exactly Can ChatGPT or Claude See and Do Once Connected?
As mentioned, ChatGPT and Claude use OAuth to access data and actions in your Gmail account. But what does that mean?
OAuth permissions (scopes) are rules that outline what third-party tools can view and do on your behalf. This can include access to your account details, permissions to read emails, and actions like sending messages.
📌 Note: The sections about direct Gmail access refer to the official ChatGPT and Claude Gmail connectors, not ChatGPT Atlas browser automation. Connecting Clean Email to your AI assistant is covered later in this article. For more information on the latter, look at how to use ChatGPT Atlas for Gmail.
For ChatGPT and Claude connections to Gmail, OAuth scope typically includes the following:
- Read access: Read, search, and analyze email content, metadata, and labels.
- Modify, Draft, and Manage access: Compose, draft, update, archive, label, trash, spam, and move emails.
- Send access: Both tools must be explicitly prompted and/or approved to send an email.
- Profile details: ChatGPT uses basic profile scope to link the account to the session.
Depending on the product and subscription plan, the above may require an admin or owner to allow specific actions for a team or enterprise account.
Other notes:
- Your Gmail password is not shared with the AI service through OAuth.
- Granting permission allows account-wide access, not just for a certain email or thread.
- Multiple accounts, such as work and personal, require a separate setup. The AI tool cannot cross-access them at the same time.
The Real Risks When Connecting AI to Gmail
Is it safe to connect Gmail to ChatGPT or Claude — or are the risks too high?
Even with the OAuth scope in mind, there are still risks associated with allowing a third-party AI tool to access your Gmail account. Let’s break them down.
Broad access scope
As mentioned earlier, granting permission to your account gives the tool access to all emails, conversations, labels, and metadata. It is not restricted to an individual message.
For this reason, it’s important to review and understand the actual OAuth scope before you approve access.
Indirect prompt injection
An indirect prompt injection occurs when a cyber attacker embeds malicious instructions in an email, web page, or document that can influence an AI tool to mistakenly execute a command.
As an example, Check Point Research revealed a vulnerability in 2026 where a prompt could force ChatGPT to discretely filter data from a person’s Gmail account to an attacker’s account.
“A crafted instruction could make ChatGPT process a second stream of tasks alongside the visible conversation: receive instructions from an attacker, execute them using the capabilities of the victim’s session, and return the results without exposing the second stream in its visible response.”
⚠️ This does not imply that all connectors are inherently unsafe, but a concrete example of this risk.
Data already processed
If you revoke OAuth access to your Gmail account, this invalidates the token. This means that the tool can no longer access new data or your account moving forward.
⚠️ However, this does not automatically delete the data that the service has already processed.
Any data or profile details that were saved while the token was valid remain stored per the service’s applicable data retention policies. You can also contact the service directly to request deletion of the data if necessary.
AI uncertainty about its own access
Connected AI systems may not always clearly communicate when or how connected mailbox data influences an answer. AI assistants can provide answers based on a mixture of search results, personal data, and model training making it unclear how it arrived at the exact response.
The key is visibility. You should know whether your mailbox information was accessed and the actions that were performed.
Look for recent email interactions that include names, dates, transactional information, or confirmation details in the AI response. You can also check your Drafts and Sent folders for emails matching a prompt you gave the AI tool.
For actions performed, you can review your Last Account Activity in Gmail. (At the bottom of the main Gmail page, look for Last account activity and select Details.)
Business and enterprise concerns
Connecting a business Gmail account to an AI service like ChatGPT or Claude can open up the company to unexpected vulnerabilities such as exposing internal or confidential information to additional systems.
For this reason, many companies restrict AI connectors — with good reason. It’s best to review your company’s security policy and check with your account admin or owner before connecting an AI service.
What About Gmail's Own Built-In AI?
Google has an AI tool called Gemini that can be used with its services including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and others. It can help you compose emails, write documents, and organize files. Access to specific features depends on your Google plan.
Gemini is a built-in tool making it different from ChatGPT and Claude which are third-party, external AI services you must deliberately connect to Gmail. Each service excels in its own AI category with Gemini for Google ecosystem value, ChatGPT for general inquiries, and Claude for coding and instructions.
💡 If you’re interested in using Gemini with Gmail, instead of or in addition to ChatGPT or Claude, you can review the Gmail AI privacy and safety risks, concerns, and protections in How Safe Is Gemini AI?.
How to Connect AI to Gmail More Safely
If you’re ready to set sail on a new AI journey with a ChatGPT or Claude connection to your Gmail account, there are several precautions you can take to reduce safety and privacy risks.
- Review the requested OAuth scope before you grant access. You’ll see each permission with brief details of what it includes — be sure to read these carefully before you approve access.
- Avoid connecting sensitive mailboxes unless the integration is necessary. Consider testing the AI tool with a secondary or less-sensitive account first to review activity and processing.
- Keep confirmation requirements enabled for actions like sending or deleting. By manually confirming these types of actions you can stop a potentially bad situation.
- Review connected-app permissions regularly. You may grant certain permissions when first connecting a tool that you may want to disallow later as your circumstances change.
- Revoke integrations that you no longer use. Keeping your connections up-to-date is a good safety measure to prevent unnecessary services from still having access when you no longer need them.
- Follow company security policies before connecting third-party AI tools to work accounts. Review your policy and/or contact the account admin or owner if you’re unsure.
- Remember that revoking OAuth permissions only stops future access. It does not automatically erase data that was already processed.
Tools like ChatGPT and Claude along with other kinds of AI email management tools can be time-saving, productivity-boosting add-ons — just know the risks and be sure to connect safely.
A More Controlled Way to Manage Email with Clean Email
You can connect Clean Email to your AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, Codex, or Claude, to analyze and manage your mail with specific limits on message access and available actions.
This is a separate connection from the official Gmail connectors discussed above, designed for inbox cleanup and organization.
Approval for specific actions
The assistant can inspect mailbox information, identify cleanup opportunities, and recommend changes without modifying messages.
Some actions require an additional confirmation step, depending on the action and your assistant’s permissions.
When approval is required, review the specific proposal and approve or deny it. A denied action does not run, and approval covers only the action reviewed. It does not authorize additional mailbox changes.
No sending through the connector
The Clean Email connection has no compose or send tool. Your AI assistant cannot send a new email, reply, or forward a message on your behalf through this connection.
The Clean Email app’s own sending features are separate. Even if the assistant misjudges a message, it cannot use this connector to email someone else.
No permanent-delete tool
The assistant can archive messages or move them to Trash, but it cannot invoke Clean Email’s permanent Delete action. That feature exists in the app and is not exposed through the AI connection.
This does not make every action reversible: subscriptions, Sender Settings, and recurring Auto Clean rules can also be changed. Review these carefully, and remember that Gmail eventually deletes messages left in Trash.
Limited message visibility
The assistant primarily works with metadata: senders, recipients, subject lines, dates, times, message sizes, read/unread and starred status, folders, labels, and attachment information.
Searches do not search full email-body text, and the assistant does not receive full message bodies or attachment contents. Limited message previews may contain snippets, so “headers only” would be too absolute.
Metadata and snippets can still contain sensitive information, and the AI service processes what the connector returns.
30-day Action History
Clean Email’s Action History shows cleaning actions from the past 30 days, including manual and automatic actions. It helps you check what happened to messages, but it is not a complete log of AI requests, approvals, denied actions, or internal operations.

If AI for Email Gets It Wrong
After you connect an AI service to your email account, things can go quite smoothly. You’re creating helpful workflows, composing well-written drafts, and using AI to organize your emails with ease.
However, things can also go wrong with an email AI tool. This might include the incorrect categorization of a message, accidental filtering of emails, or even the hasty sending of an important email.
The consequences of an AI mistake depend on the actions the integration can perform. Here is how these approaches compare, including AI assistants connected to Clean Email.
| Approach | If it gets something wrong |
|---|---|
| Native provider AI, such as Gmail or Outlook AI | Usually reversible. Incorrect categorization or sorting can typically be corrected manually. |
| Overlay AI tools such as SaneBox | Usually reversible. Sorting and filtering decisions can typically be undone, and most do not have broad send or delete authority. |
| General autonomous AI agents connected through APIs or plugins | Depends on the permissions granted. Some integrations can perform actions such as sending or deleting, and those actions may not always be reversible. |
| Clean Email connected to your AI assistant | Cannot send email or permanently delete messages through the connector. Cleanup includes archiving and moving messages to Trash, with some actions requiring specific approval. Review changes to subscriptions, Sender Settings, and Auto Clean rules separately; not every action can be undone. |
FAQs
Can Claude read my Gmail emails?
Yes, OAuth scope for Claude requests permission to read, search, and analyze your emails in order to provide services like summarizing messages and extracting action items.
Review the What Exactly Can ChatGPT or Claude See and Do section above for typical permissions requested.
What happens when you connect ChatGPT to Gmail?
ChatGPT uses OAuth to request access to your Gmail account; this does not provide your Gmail password to ChatGPT.
Here’s the actual OAuth consent flow:
- You choose to connect Gmail in ChatGPT.
- ChatGPT takes you to Google to sign in.
- Google shows what ChatGPT is asking to access or do in your Gmail account.
- You review and approve those permissions.
- ChatGPT can then access Gmail according to the permissions you approved.
Will ChatGPT or Claude send an email without me knowing?
No, the official ChatGPT and Claude Gmail integrations currently require explicit user confirmation before sending email.
Could connecting AI to my Gmail get me hacked?
Connecting AI does not automatically mean that your Gmail account becomes compromised, but integrations do introduce additional attack surfaces and risks.
Review the Real Risks section above, especially the documented prompt-injection example, for further details.
Will ChatGPT or Claude delete my emails if I connect it?
No, the official ChatGPT and Claude Gmail connectors do not simply start deleting emails automatically after you connect. And, each service may only delete or trash an email if prompted by you.
Note that with custom or self-built autonomous agent setups, deletion ability may be granted depending on the permissions and tools configured.
Does connecting my Gmail train ChatGPT or Claude on my emails?
Although data-use policies can change over time, here are the current guidelines for model training with each service:
ChatGPT: “We do not train our generalized models on data directly from connected Google apps or derivations of that data, or use that data to target or serve advertisements, except:
- when a conversation is submitted as feedback (for example, by using thumbs up/down);
- manually copied, pasted, or uploaded data from a Google app into ChatGPT conversations; or
- included in ChatGPT's response.”
Claude: “We do not train our models on your Gmail, Drive, or Calendar connector data, ensuring your private information remains private.” The policy goes on to explain that if you use Claude Free, Pro, and Max when using Claude Code with those accounts, you may allow use of chats and sessions for model training. So, any content you provide from Gmail, Drive, Calendar, or responses may be used to improve the models.
You can review this policy in detail on the Claude Support website for Use Google Workspace connectors.
Can my boss or IT team see that I connected AI to my email?
With a work-managed Google account, administrators may be able to control, restrict, audit, or block third-party app access depending on the organization's Google Workspace and security settings.
Keep in mind that connecting a work inbox carries additional risk because the mailbox may contain confidential company, customer, financial, legal, or internal information.
Will AI see old or embarrassing emails I don't want anyone to see?
AI access is generally determined by the connector's granted scope, not by whether an email is recent, important, or something you actively asked the AI tool about.
If the AI service can search your mailbox broadly, older messages may potentially fall within that accessible scope. To reduce this risk, consider proactively handling those types of emails by downloading, removing, or forwarding them to another account.
How do I stop AI from reading my emails?
Because an AI tool that you connect to your email account typically needs Read Access to provide its service, you may revoke that access if necessary.
You can:
- Remove/revoke the app under your Google Account third-party/connected-app permissions.
- Disconnect Gmail from the relevant ChatGPT or Claude connected-app/integration settings.
Can I opt out of AI in Gmail?
You can choose not to use the features offered by Gmail’s built-in AI if the safety of Gemini AI is your concern.
To disable this tool, sign into Gmail and do the following:
- Go to Settings (gear) → See all settings → General.
- Next to Smart features, uncheck the box for Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
- Confirm with Turn off and reload.
- Return to Settings → See all settings → General.
- Next to Google Workspace smart features, select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn off both toggles and click Save.
Can ChatGPT read my emails in Outlook?
