And those few seconds we check the notifications? They aren't really seconds. Not when they pile up into minutes, and then hours. Yes, they quickly add up.

And that's just one screen. I'm not even talking about how much time we spend in front of our laptops and monitors.

Also, have you ever had those days when you're literally just sitting in front of the computer but you feel so tired and flat by 5 pm? Constant interruptions can drain your mental capacity and make you feel fatigued.

All that said, here are some strategies that genuinely work and have made a massive difference in my own life:

1. Prioritize Deep Work

One of my fave non-fiction books is Cal Newport's Deep Work. It’s from this book that I learned the method of dedicating uninterrupted time blocks for cognitively demanding tasks. How it basically works is to set boundaries during these blocks—no social media, no random browsing, no checking emails frequently. Think of it as a sacred commitment to your productivity.

💡 Only then can you experience the state of flow. When you’re so focused on one thing that everything else around you disappears.

It’s like a violinist who is so into the music they’re playing or a gamer who is this close to defeating the opponent. For professionals at work, the flow state happens when in the middle of creating a pitch deck that not even office chatters in the background can take the focus off the PowerPoint on the screen.

2. Leverage the Pomodoro Technique

Another technique I swear by is the Pomodoro Technique. This one’s a game-changer as it lets me focus and do deep work in 25-minute focus intervals (called “Pomodoros”). Then, I instantly follow them up with 5-minute breaks.

It works two ways. First, I'm able to sustain mental energy for more extended periods. I also know that because there's a looming 5-minute break, I have enough motivation to try and finish a task (or a smaller chunk of work) within 25 minutes. The break becomes a reward (say I get to make another cup of coffee) for working uninterrupted. A free timer app can help you get started.

3. Set clear goals

I’ve noticed that I often lose focus when I’m unclear on what I aim to achieve. Start every day by jotting down specific goals, then stick to them like glue. Quite literally, I put these daily goals on Post-it notes and stick them on the wall in front of me (if not on the actual monitor itself, so it's hard to miss!)

📌 The most important part of this technique? Fewer goals equal greater focus. I try to limit my daily goals to two or three max! It just makes it so much easier to tick the boxes by the end of the day (and it does feel really good when I'm able to do that).

That said, it's also okay if I'm not able to cross out all of them. So be gentle on yourself and accept that some days we can work like a robot on steroids, while others we're like a swan cruising on a quiet lake.

4. Declutter your workspace (and your mind)

Clutter—physical or digital—breeds distraction. Keep your desk as minimal as possible and close all unnecessary tabs on your computer. Trust me on this one.

But clutter doesn't just come as a distraction. It sometimes disguises itself as notifications.

📌 So turn off unnecessary notifications on your phone and computer (you don’t need to know immediately if someone commented on your TikTok).

5. Use apps to lock other apps

As ironic as it may sound, digital detoxes are fantastic for focus. It may sound so counter-productive ("you mean, I accomplish more when I take a break?!"), but it paves the way for higher productivity.

Take breaks from devices every once in a while—be it for an entire day (a few times a month) or that hour before bedtime. By disconnecting, you allow your brain to reset and recharge.

You can even earn points to plant real trees in the real world and compete with friends or users around the globe.

And because of gamification, the competitive person in me wants to keep that tree growing until the time is up. Yes, you get to set the time you want to keep working (I personally set it to 25 minutes each time as part of my Pomodoro technique).

Forest combines digital detox with real-world impact. I can't even think of any other app that does this.

3. AppBlock: app to limit social media

The name says it all. AppBlock is an app that helps you block distractions by locking social media, games, or any other app that's just too tempting for you.

It's handy when you need to block all apps and stop receiving emails on your Android or iPhone, for complete focus—say when studying for exams.

It allows you to schedule blocks based on time, location, or daily usage limits. Its "Strict Mode" ensures that blocks during certain times cannot be easily bypassed, making it a powerful tool for improving focus and productivity.

My only beef with this app is that some of its advanced features, like Strict Mode, may require you to pay.
