Clean Email vs Trimbox: My Favorite Trimbox Alternative

Written by David Morelo

Trimbox was the first inbox organizer I tried when my Gmail situation started spiraling out of control. But, as the number of inboxes in my possession grew, I found myself wondering: is Trimbox the best solution out there? That's when I stumbled upon Clean Email. In this comparison, I'm finally putting both tools through their paces to reveal their similarities and differences.

Clean Email and Trimbox Comparison

Author's Note: I've rolled up my sleeves and personally tested both Trimbox and Clean Email. The insights, screenshots, and information I'm sharing in this comparison reflect my own experience and are accurate and up-to-date as of my last hands-on session in 2026.

Let's take a quick look at how Clean Email and Trimbox stack up against each other on some key features:

As I was gathering information for this Trimbox app review/comparison with Clean Email, two differences stood out to me the most, with pricing being the first one.

📌 Clean Email shows its pricing openly and includes a genuinely useful free tier, whereas Trimbox hides its prices until after you install the extension and run into its paywall.

Secondly, the range of supported email providers and platforms varies considerably between the two services. While Clean Email offers broad support for various email providers including Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, AOL, and any IMAP service across web, macOS, iOS, and Android platforms, Trimbox is more limited in this regard.

The Trimbox for Gmail Chrome extension, which provides the most seamless experience, is as the name suggests available exclusively for Gmail users. Others have to contend with the web and mobile apps. This Gmail-centric approach might be a significant drawback for users who, like I do, rely on multiple mail services.

However, the real differences become apparent when you start using these tools for day-to-day email management. Here's what I've noticed:

Quick verdict: Trimbox is a handy, single-purpose Gmail extension for quickly unsubscribing from newsletters — but it's Gmail-only, doesn't truly unsubscribe, and has no organization or automation. If you want all-in-one, multi-provider inbox management, Clean Email is the stronger Trimbox alternative.

I want to unsubscribe from emails

Trimbox: While Trimbox markets itself as an unsubscribe tool, it doesn't actually solve the issue of unsubscribing in the true sense. When you use Trimbox to "unsubscribe," it actually creates a filter in Gmail to block emails from specific senders. Any new emails from these senders are sent directly to your Trash folder. The biggest drawback of this approach is that unwanted senders will continue to message you.

Clean Email: When you click "Unsubscribe" in Clean Email, several things happen. The app sends an actual unsubscribe request to the sender and even fills in unsubscribe forms for you when necessary. It then immediately provides you with the option to move existing messages from that sender to the Trash. If the sender doesn't honor the unsubscribe request, Clean Email will reroute all future emails from that sender to the Trash.

I want to clean up unwanted emails

🤔 Trimbox: The main and basically only cleaning function is deleting messages in bulk, but only from specific senders. This means you need to check each sender separately, which can be time-consuming and inefficient for large-scale inbox cleaning.

Clean Email: With Clean Email, you can also bulk-delete messages from specific senders, but the tool doesn't stop there. You can also delete all messages that fit certain criteria (such messages are automatically organized in many different Smart Folders), set up rules to automatically clean up certain types of messages as they arrive, apply Cleaning Suggestions, and more. With these features, I find it to be very easy to make even the messiest inbox usable again.

I want to organize my emails

Trimbox: Unfortunately, Trimbox offers virtually no options for email organization. Like Leave Me Alone and many other alternatives, the tool primarily focuses on unsubscribing (or rather, blocking) emails from specific senders.

Clean Email: My favorite Clean Email organization feature have to be Smart Folders, which sort your emails based on their type, such as social media notifications or travel-related emails. I typically start by opening a Smart Folder and then sorting it further based on criteria such as date or size. Once I have a bunch of messages selected and know which action (like archive, delete, move, or label) I want to apply, I consider automating the action by creating an Auto Clean rule. This is how I can become and stay organized with very little effort required.

I want to automate routine email tasks

Trimbox: Unfortunately, Trimbox doesn't offer any automation features for routine email tasks, so it won't be able to help in this regard.

Clean Email: Clean Email shines when it comes to automation. The Auto Clean feature, which I've mentioned several times already in this article, makes it easy to create custom rules to manage incoming emails automatically. For example, you can set up rules to delete emails from certain senders, move specific types of emails to designated folders, and so on. Your rules can then be managed from a convenient dashboard, and you can not only delete them but also pause/resume them.

I want to clean up my inbox for free

🤔 Trimbox: Is Trimbox free? Not really. Trimbox has a limited free trial (a handful of unsubscribes) and then requires a paid plan — and a common complaint in reviews is that the free tier feels misleading, with a paywall appearing after just a few unsubscribes. It's useful for testing, but won't be enough to actually organize your inbox.

🤔 Clean Email: Clean Email also offers a free trial, but it's more generous than Trimbox's. You can manage up to 1,000 emails and unsubscribe from 25 subscriptions without paying a dime. This gives you a better opportunity to clean up a significant portion of your inbox and test out more of Clean Email's features.

Quick Summary

The differences between Trimbox and Clean Email are easy to summarize because each tool is distinct, so deciding which one to choose boils down to how comprehensively you want to approach the inbox cleanup:

➡️ Choose Trimbox if you're a Gmail user looking for a simple Chrome extension to quickly unsubscribe from newsletters. You'll never be wondering how to use Trimbox because it's as simple as clicking the teal icon next to emails from mailing lists.

➡️ Choose Clean Email if you're looking for a comprehensive Trimbox alternative that offers powerful tools to clean, organize, and automate mail management across multiple email providers. It's ideal for users dealing with severely cluttered inboxes who want to get rid of the clutter once and for all.

What Is Trimbox?

Trimbox is a popular inbox organizer whose purpose is to help Gmail users get rid of unwanted messages. The inbox organizer is known best for its Chrome extension (Gmail only), but you can also use it as a web or mobile app.

The Trimbox Chrome extension has around 60,000 users and a 4.4★ rating from roughly 650 reviews on the Chrome Web Store, and it has been featured by Google. Trimbox says it has helped 515,000+ users unsubscribe from 28M+ lists and clean over 1.7 billion emails. When you install the extension, it integrates with your Gmail account to scan your inbox for subscription emails and newsletters, then adds a small teal icon next to the sender's name for messages it identifies as coming from mailing lists.

💡 Is Trimbox safe and legit? Yes — Trimbox is a legitimate, safe-to-use tool. The information it needs is stored only locally in your web browser, and it's deleted when you remove the extension. The real catch isn't safety, it's scope: Trimbox only manages Gmail newsletters and doesn't truly unsubscribe you (more on that below). For details, you can read the full privacy policy.

What Is Clean Email?

Clean Email is a versatile inbox organizer and one of the most capable unsubscribe apps. Unlike Trimbox, it supports all major email services, including Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and Outlook. You can access Clean Email through its web app for desktop use, or download the mobile app for on-the-go inbox management. A web browser extension like the one Trimbox provides for Chrome isn't available.

As the list of key features below shows, Clean Email is a far more capable tool than Trimbox. It offers a holistic approach to inbox management that goes beyond unsubscribing. This makes it perfect for those who aim to keep an inbox empty (or at least as empty as possible) all the time.

💡 Is Clean Email safe to use and legit? Yes, Clean Email is among the safest tools of its kind because it never sells or shares user data, even in anonymized form, with any third parties. What's more, Clean Email is fully compliant with Gmail's privacy policy requirements, so you know its developers are not just making empty claims.

Key features

Here are some of the most noteworthy features Clean Email has to offer (you can find a more comprehensive list here):

Why Clean Email is More Powerful?

The extensive list of features above alone would probably be enough to illustrate that Clean Email is much more powerful than Trimbox, but I believe the main reasons are worth highlighting separately:

📌 Switch from Trimbox — works beyond Gmail, with no paywall after a few unsubscribes. Clean Email works with Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, AOL, and any IMAP account; cleans up to 1,000 emails for free; includes 25 free unsubscribes; and gives a 14-day full premium trial — no Gmail-only extension required.

🛡️ Trusted by 1.5M+ users. Clean Email holds 4.7/5 on Trustpilot (~558 reviews) and 6,900+ verified reviews across G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, the App Store, and Google Play (4.5★ from ~3,500 App Store ratings).

Summary

All inbox management tools have their strengths and weaknesses, and that's true even for Trimbox and Trimbox alternatives like Clean Email.

Since Clean Email offers far more capability across every major provider — with transparent pricing and a real free tier — while staying just as easy to use, I'm convinced that anyone who is serious about email management should use it as a better Trimbox alternative.

FAQs

How does Trimbox work?

Trimbox goes through your Gmail inbox and singles out the newsletters and bulk senders. You can then click its teal icon & get rid of emails from that sender for good, or just delete all of them. What Trimbox also does is set up filters in Gmail to keep future messages from those people out of your inbox.

How to cancel Trimbox subscription?

If you bought Trimbox through the App Store or Google Play, jump into your account's Subscriptions page and cancel next to Trimbox. If you got a web subscription, head over to web.trimbox.io and sort out your billing in the account settings.

How do inbox-cleaning apps get access to my email account?

Inbox management tools use safe ways to get permission from your email provider, like OAuth. This lets the app see & organize your messages without ever getting hold of your password. Any decent service will let you know exactly what access they need before they start, and you can take it away at any time from your email account security settings.

Are inbox-organizer apps suitable for business or shared accounts?

It depends on the company rules. Many organisations block third-party apps from getting into mailboxes because they are worried about security. Before you add any inbox cleanup tools to a work account, check with your IT team that they are allowed and suit the company standards.

Can I use Clean Email and Trimbox at the same time?

Technically you can, but we wouldn't recommend it. Both of these tools can do things like apply filters or delete lots of messages at once, so if you run them together you might end up with a mess, especially if you use Gmail. Just pick one of them if you want to keep things simple & in control.

How can I tell which unsubscribe app is better for me?

If you use Gmail and just want to get rid of a few newsletters, then Trimbox is probably the way to go. But if you deal with loads of inboxes or want something that can really automate things and sort your emails into groups, then Clean Email might be more your cup of tea.

Is Trimbox safe?

Yes, Trimbox is safe and legitimate. It's a Google-featured Gmail extension that stores the data it needs locally in your browser and deletes it when you remove the extension. The main limitation is scope, not security — it only handles Gmail newsletters.

Is Trimbox free?

No. Trimbox offers only a limited free trial (a few unsubscribes) before requiring a paid plan, and many users find the free tier misleading because the paywall appears quickly. Clean Email's free tier is more generous — 1,000 emails managed and 25 unsubscribes at no cost.

How much does Trimbox cost?

Trimbox costs roughly $4.99/month or $39.99/year, with a one-time lifetime option around $69. Note that Trimbox doesn't display its prices on the website — you only see them after installing the extension and reaching the paywall.

Is Trimbox legit?

Yes, Trimbox is a legitimate product — a Google-featured Chrome extension with around 60,000 users and a 4.4★ rating. It does what it promises for Gmail newsletters, though it doesn't truly unsubscribe you and is limited to Gmail.
