Not many people know how to attach emails because it depends on the mail client and mail service provider they use. Keep reading to learn how to attach an email to an email in various mail providers.

How to Attach an Email to an Email in Gmail

In Gmail, you can attach messages as .eml files without even downloading them to your device. However, because of the Gmail attachment size limit, any attachments over 25MB will be attached as a Google Drive file.

There are also different ways of attaching emails, depending on if you’re using Gmail via the web or mobile app.

How to attach via the web

On the web, you can both forward a message as an attachment and reply to a message with an attached email.

To forward a message as an attachment:

  1. Open your Gmail inbox via your preferred web browser.
  2. Select the messages you want to share with someone.
  3. Choose More → Forward as Attachment.

To reply and attach emails in Gmail:

  1. Open your Gmail inbox.
  2. Open the item you want to respond to and select Reply.
  3. At the top right, click the Pop Out Icon. This will move the message into a small box and allow you to still navigate your inbox.
  4. From the inbox, find the message you want to add as an attachment.
  5. Drag it into the Pop Out box to attach.
  6. Once everything is set up, press Send.

How to attach via the mobile app

To attach emails this way, simply:

  1. Open the Gmail app on your device.
  2. Find the email you want to be attached and click to open it.
  3. Tap on the three-dots menu in the upper right.
  4. Select Print, then choose PDF.

However, due to the Outlook attachment size limit, you won’t be able to attach any emails over 20MB to a new message.

Attaching Emails in Apple Mail Client (on Mac and on iPhone)

Apple Mail on Mac has a built-in feature for attaching emails to another message. On iPhone and iPad, this option is not available.

How to attach in Apple Mail on Mac

Apple Mail on macOS lets you forward one or more emails as .eml attachments:

  1. Open the Mail app on your Mac.
  2. Select the email (or emails) you want to attach.
  3. In the menu bar, go to MessageForward as Attachment (or press Option + Cmd + F).
  4. A new message will open with the selected emails attached as .eml files.
  5. Add recipients, write your message, and click Send.

You can also drag an email from your mailbox list directly into an open compose window to attach it.

How to attach in Apple Mail on iPhone and iPad

The Mail app on iOS and iPadOS does not support attaching an email to another message. Your best option is to forward the original email separately, or use the Print → Save as PDF workaround:

  1. Open the email you want to attach.
  2. Tap the Share button → Print.
  3. On the print preview, pinch outward on the page thumbnail to save it as a PDF.
  4. Tap the Share button again and save the PDF to Files.
  5. Compose a new email, tap the body, and choose Add Document to attach the saved PDF.
