How to Mark All Emails as Read in Gmail
It’s easier to mark all emails as read in Gmail than you might think, especially when you see that you can only select 50 messages at once. We have a handy trick when using the website and the Gmail mobile app on iPhone or Android.
In Gmail on the Web
- To mark all emails in your mailbox, open the left-hand menu and select All Mail. You may have to click More to see this option.
- When the message list refreshes, select Is unread at the top. This is a convenient alternative to typing in the Google search operator.
- Above your message list, mark the empty checkbox. You’ll notice “All 100 (or 50) conversations on this page are selected”. Click the link to the right for Select all conversations that match this search.
- Click the Mark as Read icon in the top toolbar to mark all selected emails as read.
In the Gmail Mobile App
- To mark all emails as read, open the left-hand menu and select All emails.
- At the top, pick Is unread. Note that you may need to swipe right to see this option.
- Scroll down the message list a few times to display more than 50 emails.
- Long-press the left side of any message and then pick Select all at the top.
- Tap the Mark as read icon (open envelope) at the top.
You may have to repeat the process if you need to mark thousands of emails as read.

How to Mark All Emails as Read in Outlook
If you’re a Microsoft Outlook user, you can mass mark emails as read on the web and in the mobile app in just a few steps.
📌 Tip: If you prefer to not mark emails as read in Outlook and simply reach Outlook inbox zero, this is another solid option.
In Outlook on the Web
- To mark all messages as read, make sure the Navigation Pane is open on the left. If you don’t see it, click the Show Navigation Pane icon (three lines) on the top left.
- You’ll notice the total count of unread emails to the right of Inbox or the folder name. Hover your cursor over your Inbox or a folder containing the emails you want to manage.
- When the three dots display to the right, click and pick Mark all as read.
In Outlook on Desktop
- Launch your desktop email client on Windows.
- Right-click on Search Folders and pick New Search Folder.
- Select Create a custom Search Folder and hit Choose.
- Give your new Search Folder a name and click Criteria.
- Head to the More Choices tab.
- Tick the Only items that are box and choose Unread.
- Confirm by clicking OK.
- Right-click the new Search Folder.
- Choose Mark All as Read.
In the Outlook Mobile App
- To mark all messages as read on iPhone or Android, choose your Inbox or a specific folder in the left-hand menu. You can access the menu using your profile icon on the top left.
- Tap the Filter icon on the top right of the message list and pick Unread.
- Long-press any email and then pick Select All at the top.
- Select the Mark as read icon (open envelope) at the bottom.
- Confirm by tapping Mark in the pop-up window.

How to Mark All Emails as Read in Apple Mail
Want to mark emails as read in Apple Mail? You can manage all messages quickly on both your Mac and iPhone.
In Apple Mail on Mac
- To mark all emails as read, make sure the sidebar is open on the left. If you don’t see it, select View → Show Sidebar in the menu bar.
- You’ll notice the total count of unread emails to the right of All Inboxes (all connected email accounts) as well as each mailbox and folder.
- Right-click the mailbox, folder, or All Inboxes and pick Mark All Messages as Read.
- Alternatively, select the mailbox or folder and click Mailbox → Mark All Messages as Read in the menu bar.
In Apple Mail on iPhone
- To mark all emails as read, choose a specific Mailbox or pick All Inboxes for all email accounts.
- Tap the Unread icon on the bottom left to filter the unread messages.
- Select Edit on the top right and then pick the messages.
- Tip: To quickly select multiple emails, drag your finger down the left side of the message list and you’ll see the emails marked as you go. Scroll down and continue to select the messages the same way.
- Tap Mark on the bottom left and pick Mark as Read.
Follow the same process for multiple additional messages.

How to Mark All Emails as Read in Yahoo Mail

In Yahoo Mail on the Web
- To mark all messages as read, pick Unread in the left-hand menu.
- Check the Select box at the top of the message list to select all messages. You’ll likely only see a certain number of messages selected, but if you continue scrolling down at the bottom of your message list, you’ll see that number increase as more emails load.
- Open the three dots in the top toolbar and pick Mark as read.
In Yahoo Mail in the Mobile App
- To mark all messages as read, select Unread at the top of the message list. Note that you may need to swipe right to see this option.
- Select Edit on the top right and pick Select all.
- Tap the Mark as read icon at the bottom.
Follow the same process for multiple additional messages.
