POP3 vs. IMAP: What's The Difference
To begin, both POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) are Message Accessing Agents.
In a nutshell, IMAP is an email protocol that facilitates the management and retrieval of messages from a receiving server. Along with IMAP, there is another mechanism for receiving messages referred to as POP3.
Their distinction is with IMAP; the message does not get retained on a local device, such as a computer. Instead, it gets contained on the server. In comparison, POP3 mail will establish a connection and attempt to keep the mail on the local device, whether computer or mobile.
💡 Tip:IMAP is preferable when selecting a server if you intend to access your mailbox from several devices, such as a work computer and a smartphone. On the other hand, POP3 is more efficient if you only have one device but have many communications. Additionally, POP3 is preferable if you have a slow internet connection and require offline access to your emails.
In the end, IMAP is considered more flexible and complex than POP3 and, thus, is generally recommended.
