How to Get Gemini AI for Gmail
You can use the Google Gmail AI tool for personal, business, and educational accounts. However, you’ll need a subscription or specific Google plan in order to do so. Once you get Gemini for Gmail, you simply enable it and start enjoying its features.
Get Gemini for Gmail

Access Gemini in Gmail
With most plans and account types, you can access the Gemini side panel by clicking the Gemini icon (star) on the top right. You can then type a command or request in the Ask Gemini box.

As of January 2026, Google is deprecating the Gemini side panel for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers. It’s replaced with “in-line AI experiences” which incorporates Gemini right into the Gmail interface.
So, if you subscribe to one of those AI plans and still see the Gemini side panel, you can continue to use it until it no longer appears. Then, simply select the Gemini feature you want in the compose or reading pane.
As of this writing, there are no changes to the AI Overview in Search feature.
Clean Up Gmail With Gemini
Wondering, “Can Gemini delete, archive, send, or manage emails?” This is a good question considering Gemini’s feature set for Gmail.
Gemini’s features can help you locate emails that are cluttering your inbox, but lack the ability to act on them. So, you can use Gemini to find the emails you want and then use the native tools for actions like archive or mass delete in Gmail.
Let’s look at some examples of finding and cleaning up emails with Gemini and Gmail.
Use the natural language search to locate promotional and marketing messages that consume space such as “Find Black Friday emails” or “Find shopping discount emails.” Once you receive your results, you can review, select, and delete the messages.
Summarize lengthy email threads to see if they’re still relevant. You can open the Gemini sidebar and use a preset or type “Summarize this email in more detail.” You can also use a prompt like “Is there any further action required in this email thread.” After you review the response, you can decide to archive or delete the conversation.
Locate and group outdated emails with a prompt like “Find email threads older than 6 months and group them by sender” or “Find threads older than 1 year and group them by date.” Here again, you can review and then archive or delete the results per your preference.
Other cleanup prompts to try:
- “Provide a list of the top 10 promotional email senders.”
- “Find old emails with large attachments.”
- “List all newsletters I receive most frequently.”
- “Find emails from inactive conversations that can be archived.”
- “Identify subscriptions I may be paying for.”
Enhance Gemini for Gmail With Clean Email
Because Gemini can’t execute commands like Delete, Archive, or similar, you might consider a third-party assistant that can both find and act on messages.
Clean Email can help you locate emails with its searching, sorting, and grouping capabilities and then act on the results for a fast and easy bulk cleanup. Whether you want to act on hundreds or thousands of messages, there’s no delay, no performance drop, and no limitations on mobile.
Unsubscriber: For managing subscriptions, you can use the Unsubscriber tool which lists all of your subscriptions, similar to Gmail’s Manage Subscriptions feature. The difference is that you can unsubscribe from multiple emails at once and even pause subscriptions using Unsubscriber.

Screener: For viewing emails from new and unknown senders, Screener isolates them in a dedicated spot for you to review. You can then Allow or Block future emails with a simple click. This is a unique feature you won’t find with Gmail or similar apps.

Auto Clean: For mailbox rules that apply to both new and existing emails, Auto Clean provides an extensive set of conditions and actions. Remember, Gmail’s automated filters only cover incoming messages, not existing ones. Additionally, Auto Clean is available in the mobile app unlike Gmail’s filters.

Clean Email works alongside Gmail, so you can still take advantage of Gemini for its usefulness. Just add Clean Email to the workflow for advanced cleanup and smart email management features.
