Does Gmail Require a Phone Number?

When you're looking to create a new Gmail account, you might notice Google often asks for a phone number. Why? There are three main reasons:

• Anti-spam protection: Google uses your mobile number to verify that you're a real person, not a bot. This step significantly cuts down on the number of fake accounts, helping to keep spam and automated junk mail sent from Gmail's servers at bay.
• Identity verification: Your mobile number serves as a recovery option. If you ever forget your password or lose access to your inbox, a phone number can be a quick way to verify your identity and regain control.
• Extra authentication factor: Last but not least, your phone number adds an extra layer of security through two-factor authentication. This means even if someone gets hold of your password, they won't be able to access your account without also having your phone.

Still, Google’s own sign-up instructions list the phone number as optional, so you can usually leave it out.

Legitimate Methods to Create Gmail Account Without Phone Number

The methods below work whether you want to change your Gmail address or get an additional one. Keep in mind that Google says phone verification is sometimes required before you can create an account. When that happens, the phone number screen has no Skip button.

Sign Up for Gmail Without Phone Number on Android and iOS

On a phone, you can start sign-up from the device’s account settings.

On Android:

1. Launch the Settings app.
2. Tap Passwords & accounts (on some devices, it’s called Users & accounts or Manage accounts).
3. Under Accounts, tap Add account and choose Google.
4. Tap the Create account link in the bottom-left corner just like you would if you wanted to add another email address to Gmail normally.
5. Then choose For my personal use option.
6. Enter your name, date of birth, gender, and tap Next.
7. Enter the desired email address and create a strong password and tap Next.
8. Add a recovery email address and tap Next.
9. Tap Skip when asked to enter your phone number.
10. Review your account information and confirm your decision to open a Gmail account without a phone number.

On iOS:

1. Launch the Settings app.
2. Tap Apps, then Mail, then Mail Accounts (on older iOS versions, tap Mail, then Accounts).
3. Select the Add Account option and choose Google.
4. Tap the Create account link in the bottom-left corner and choose For my personal use.
5. Enter your first and last name, date of birth, gender, the desired email address, and a strong password.
6. Add a recovery email address and tap Next.
7. Tap Skip when asked to enter your mobile contact.
8. Review your account information and confirm your decision to create a Google account without a phone number.

Create Gmail Without Phone Number on Desktop

On a computer, you can sign up from any web browser:

1. Open your preferred web browser and navigate to the Gmail website (we recommend you use Incognito mode if you're currently signed in to a different Gmail address).
2. Click Create account in the bottom-left corner and choose For my personal use.
3. Fill in your first and last name, date of birth, gender, the desired email address, and create a strong password.
4. Add a recovery email address.
5. Select Skip when asked to enter your mobile number.
6. Review your account information and confirm your decision to sign up for Gmail without a phone number.

Alternative Ways to Create Email Without Phone Number

If Google insists on phone verification, you’ll need a number that can receive a text message, though it doesn’t have to be your own:

• Prepaid phone numbers: If you're looking for a more private and controlled option, consider using a prepaid mobile number. These numbers can be purchased relatively inexpensively and are often available at local stores or online. They provide a temporary solution for phone verification without tying your personal number to the account. Once you've completed the email account setup, you can discard the prepaid number, as long as you didn’t add it as your recovery phone or 2-Step Verification number.
• Virtual phone number apps: Numero (available for iOS and Android) and other similar apps provide virtual cell numbers. These numbers can receive SMS online, but Google doesn’t accept every number for verification, and virtual numbers are often rejected. They also offer a layer of privacy since you're not using your personal contact.
• Free online SMS services: Services like Sakari (paid after a free trial) or SMSToMe (free) let you receive text messages online. Free public numbers are often rejected because Google limits how many times one number can be used for verification. Anyone can also read the codes they receive, so never add one as your recovery phone.
