Definition
💡 A junk mail folder, also known as a spam folder, is a dedicated folder in an email client where emails that have been identified as unsolicited, unwanted, or potentially harmful are kept. The purpose of the junk mail folder is to help users organize their inboxes and stay safe from potential threats, such as scams and phishing.
Where is the junk mail folder located?
In Gmail, the junk mail folder is labeled as "Spam" and can be found in the left-hand side menu.
Similarly, in Yahoo Mail, the junk mail folder is also labeled as "Spam." It can be found under the "Mail" tab at the top of the page.
In Outlook, the junk mail folder is labeled as "Junk Email." It can be found in the left-hand side menu under "Folders."
In Apple Mail, the junk mail folder is labeled as "Junk." It can be found in the mailbox list on the left-hand side of the screen.
As you can see, the junk mail folder goes by several different names, but its location is consistently within the left-hand navigation pane across different email services.
How to make junk mail go to the Junk folder
All major mail services allow users to move messages to the Junk folder by right-clicking the email in your inbox and selecting an option like "Mark as spam" or "Move to junk."
If you have the message you want to send to the Junk folder already opened, then you can use the toolbar at the top of the email client to mark the message as spam or junk. Typically, there will be a button labeled "Spam," "Junk," or an icon representing a junk mail symbol, and all you need to do is click on it.
When you move an email to the Junk folder, you not only make your inbox neater but also train the spam filter to recognize similar messages as junk in the future. This training helps improve the accuracy of the spam filter so that similar unwanted messages are automatically moved to the Junk folder next time.
