What Is a One-Click Unsubscribe?

Definition

💡 One-click unsubscribe is a link or button contained in an email header allowing the recipient to remove themself from future marketing messages. While similar to an unsubscribe link, one-click unsubscribe automatically removes the recipient from the mailing list without any further actions like confirming on a web page.

How does it work?

When an email recipient uses the one-click unsubscribe option in a message, they are automatically removed from future emails. This applies to promotional and marketing emails, not transactional or relationship communications.

Example

Gmail and Yahoo announced new requirements for bulk email senders effective June 2024. To reduce the number of unsolicited emails that recipients receive, senders of marketing messages must include a one-click unsubscribe link or button in the header of the email.
