Unsubscriber
You can use the Unsubscriber to prevent marketing emails and newsletters from ever reaching your mailbox. When you unsubscribe from a sender, Clean Email makes sure that the sender’s mailing list messages do not reach in your Inbox – even if the sender does not respect requests to unsubscribe. Also, you can optionally choose to clean existing messages from the sender at the same time you unsubscribe.
📌 Note: If you prefer to block all incoming messages from all new senders until you have approved a sender, check out the Screener feature.
How does the Unsubscriber work?
Clean Email takes every step we can find to unsubscribe you, such as sending an email message to the sender, following the unsubscribe links found in message headers, and automating completion of unsubscribe forms.
However, some senders require a grace period or additional time to process your unsubscribe request, and they may continue sending you email in the meantime. Therefore, Clean Email catches messages from unsubscribed mailing lists and moves them to the trash instead of delivering them to your inbox.
In case you want to temporarily stop receiving marketing and newsletter messages from a particular mailing list, the Unsubscriber also offers a "Pause" feature. When you use Pause, Clean Email does not send an unsubscribe request to the sender. However, all messages received from the mailing list are automatically moved to the trash, so they will not clutter up your Inbox.
How Clean Email Identifies Mailing List Messages
Clean Email identifies unique subscriptions based on the unsubscribe link found in the message headers. If two messages arrive with identical unsubscribe links in the headers, Clean Email treats them as the same subscription/having come from the same sender.
Even if the sender names and email addresses are different, messages with identical unsubscribe links in the headers are grouped together in the same message group.
Similarly, you may see two separate message groups in the Unsubscriber that appear to come from the same sender. This would happen if the messages in the groups have different unsubscribe links in the message headers.
Using the Unsubscriber
You can access the Unsubscriber by clicking Unsubscriber in the left-hand pane.
The blue number to the right of the button shows how many mailing list subscriptions you have not yet acted upon by clicking Unsubscribe or Keep Receiving in the Unsubscriber.
Here is the main Unsubscriber interface. Notice that the mailing lists are sorted with the latest (most recent) messages at the top.
Unsubscribing from a Mailing List
To Unsubscribe from a mailing list, click or tap Unsubscribe. This instructs Clean Email to send an unsubscribe request to the sender and automatically send any new messages from that sender to Trash, as explained above.
The Unsubscribe? confirmation dialog appears.
- The Move existing messages to Trash toggle is enabled by default. If you leave it turned on, existing messages from the sender will be moved to the trash. Click the toggle if you want to turn it off and keep the existing messages.
- If you turn on the toggle labeled Do not ask for confirmation again, you will not be prompted to confirm unsubscribing from other mailing lists in the future.
⚠️ Caution: If you leave the Move existing messages to Trash toggle enabled and turn on the Do not ask for confirmation again toggle, unsubscribing from other mailing lists will automatically move all associated messages to the trash.
You can review your “Do not ask for confirmation again” settings and update them by clicking your email address at the top left-hand corner of the page and clicking Preferences from the account menu. - Click Confirm when to complete the unsubscribe process.
Keeping a Mailing List Subscription
If you want to continue receiving messages from the mailing list in your inbox, click Keep Receiving.
The Keep getting messages? confirmation appears.
- If you turn on the toggle labeled Do not ask for confirmation again, you will not be prompted to confirm keeping subscriptions to other mailing lists each time you click Keep Receiving in the future.
- Click Confirm to complete the process; the selected mailing list messages will be removed from the Unsubscriber page.
Alternatively, if you want to keep receiving messages from the mailing list but you do not want them delivered to your inbox, click the drop-down next to Keep Receiving.
You can choose to have Clean Email deliver the mailing list messages to Read Later. If you choose this option, a confirmation dialog appears.
- If you turn the Apply to existing messages toggle off, existing messages from the mailing list will remain in their current folders, but future messages will be delivered to Read Later.
- If you leave the Apply to existing messages toggle enabled, all existing messages from the mailing list will be delivered to Read Later.
- Click Confirm to confirm your selections. For more information, please see Read Later.
You can also choose to have the mailing list messages delivered to another specific mail folder.
- If you want to choose an existing folder where Clean Email will deliver the mailing list messages, click the Choose or create Label… drop-down and select the folder.
- If you want to create a new folder to hold the mailing list messages, enter the folder name in the Choose or create Label… field.
- If you turn the Apply to existing messages toggle off, existing messages from the mailing list will remain in their current folders, but future messages will be delivered to the specified folder.
- If you leave the Apply to existing messages toggle enabled, all existing messages from the mailing list will be delivered to the specified folder.
- Click Confirm to confirm your selections.
Pausing a Sender’s Mailing List Messages
To pause mailing list messages from the sender — that is, to have Clean Email automatically send all the sender’s mailing list messages to the trash without actually unsubscribing — click the drop-down next to Unsubscribe and then click Pause.
Unpausing a Sender’s Mailing List Messages
To resume receiving mailing list messages from a sender whose messages you have previously paused, click the Paused tab at the top of the Unsubscriber window. A list of all paused mailing list subscriptions appears.
Click Unblock next to the mailing list you want to unpause. Clean Email resumes delivering the sender’s mailing list messages to your inbox, and they no longer appear on any tab in the Unsubscriber.
Managing Multiple Mailing Lists at Once
In the Unbsubscriber, you can select multiple mailing lists at one time and quickly take action on all of the selected mailing lists.
To select more than one mailing list, click the circular sender icon for the first sender. All icons are replaced by blue selection buttons. Click inside the blue circle to select each additional sender.
As soon as you select the first sender, a blue action bar appears at the bottom of the page. You can click any of the available commands to quickly perform that action on all selected mailing lists.
⚠️ Caution: Please use caution when unsubscribing or performing other group actions on multiple mailing lists at the same time.
When you have selected multiple senders, you can use the buttons in the action bar to perform any of the actions described above:
- Unsubscribe
- Keep Receiving
- Keep and deliver to “Read Later”
- Keep and deliver to a specific folder
- Pause
Previewing Messages in the Unsubscriber
If you are not sure what the messages in the group are about, you can click anywhere in the group to view a preview of the most recent message subjects in the right-hand preview pane.
For more information about the options available when previewing message groups, please see Previewing Messages.
Managing Unsubscribed Mailing Lists
To view a list of all mailing lists from which you have unsubscribed, click the Unsubscribed tab at the top of the Unsubscriber.
On this tab, a separate line appears for each mailing list from which you have unsubscribed. The messages are sorted by the date on which you received the latest message from the sender, with the most recent senders at the top by default.
You can use the search field at the top of the page to search all unsubscribed mailing lists. As on the New tab, you can also click any group to open the preview pane and review examples of the messages you have received via that mailing list.
If you decide you want to resubscribe to the sender’s messages, click Unblock.
📌 Important: Clicking the Unblock button stops Clean Email from moving the messages to the trash upon receipt. However, because you had unsubscribed from the sender, you still need to contact the sender directly and request that the sender resume sending messages to your address.
Other Ways to Unsubscribe
When you are in the Inbox or in any Smart Folder, Clean Email provides several ways to unsubscribe from eligible senders for your convenience.
For example, you can also see the Unsubcribe button next to each eligible group in the Smart Folder.
Also, if you click to preview a group of messages that you can Unsubscribe from, the Unsubscribe option appears in the group’s quick actions when your cursor hovers over the group.
The option also appears in the Sender Settings section at the top of the preview pane.
When viewing your Senders, the Unsubscribe button also appears in the preview pane for any contact from whom you have received mailing list messages.
Clicking the Unsubscribe button in any of these locations opens a confirmation dialog, unless you have previously enabled the “Do not ask for confirmation again” toggle when unsubscribing from a mailing list.
For more information on the options in the confirmation dialog, please see Unsubscribing from a Mailing List, above.
