What are Social Emails?
The Social Tab is one of Gmail’s default categories that catch email updates from:
- Social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
- Online dating sites (e.g., Bumble, Tinder, OkCupid)
- Media-sharing platforms (e.g., YouTube, Pinterest)
- Other social websites (e.g., Reddit, Tumblr)
Social emails are usually high-volume but less critical messages that can easily clutter our inboxes. Thankfully, the Social tab separates these from more urgent and important ones to help us attend to the latter more swiftly.
Deleting Social Emails in Gmail
Taking control of social emails can be a daunting task. The key is to be familiar with tricks and shortcuts, and the various ways you can be on top of your inbox situation.
Here’s how you can get rid of all social emails in Gmail.
Delete all social emails on mobile using an iPhone or Android
For mobile users, there are two ways to delete all social emails in Gmail – through the Gmail app or using the mobile web browser.
Method 1: Via the Gmail app
- Launch the Gmail app and log in to your account.
- Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner.
- Scroll down and navigate to the Social category tab.
- Activate the selection mode by tapping and holding on the first email.
- You should see a tick box to Select all messages. Tap on the box.
- The first 50 messages in the category will be selected.
- Tap the Trash can icon at the upper right corner of the screen to clear your Gmail of the selected emails.

⚠️ Important: If you have more than 50 emails in Social, scroll down until you see more unselected messages or reach the bottom of your inbox, and tap the box again.
If you have a huge number of social emails to delete, a better way is to do it on a web browser instead. Here’s how it works:
Method 2: Via the desktop site view on mobile
On iPhone
Cleaning up your Social tab using your mobile browser on an iPhone can be quite tricky due to the additional steps involved. However, if you have enough time to select all your social emails, follow this guide:
- Open iPhone or iPad Settings.
- Scroll down, find and tap Safari.
- Scroll down and tap Request Desktop Website.
- Turn on All Websites.
- Open the Safari browser and go to https://mail.google.com/.
- Tap on the Social tab at the top of your Inbox.
- Tap the checkbox at the top left corner to select all emails on the current page.
- Tap the link to Select all … conversations in Social.
- Locate the trash can icon at the top of the screen and click on it to delete all selected emails.
- The selected messages should all go to Trash.

📌 Tip: Don’t forget to clear your Trash folder to permanently delete all these messages.
On Android
Similarly to iOS, there is no way to select all emails in the tab using the Gmail app on your Android, so you may have to use your mobile browser and request the desktop website view.
Follow these steps:
- Open a desktop browser, like Chrome or Firefox, on your Android.
- Go to https://mail.google.com/.
- Access the menu by tapping the three dots in the top right corner of the screen. Select Desktop site.
- Click on the Social tab at the top of your inbox.
- Click the checkbox at the top left corner to select all emails on the current page.
- To select all emails, click the link Select all … conversations in Social at the top of the list.
- At the top of the page, locate the Trash can icon and click on it to delete all selected emails.
- If prompted, confirm the deletion.
💡 Note: Using a browser in desktop mode on a mobile device can be challenging and time-consuming due to the multiple steps involved and the smaller screen size. For a more user-friendly experience, we recommend using the Clean Email mobile app, which allows you to manage and delete emails in bulk with ease.
Delete all at once on the desktop
Follow these steps to delete all social emails in Gmail in one go:
- Open your Gmail account and log in if necessary.
- Click on the Social tab at the top or the side of your Inbox.
- Click the checkbox at the top left corner to select all emails on the current page.
- A message will appear at the top of the list giving an option to select all conversations in Social. Click the link to select all emails.
- At the top of the page, locate the Trash can icon and click on it to delete all selected emails.
- When prompted, click OK to confirm the bulk action.

If you have thousands of emails on your Social tab, you might have to wait a few minutes for everything to be deleted.
Using Clean Email to Manage Social Emails
Sometimes, social emails might make it straight to your primary folder. That makes it a little tricky to get rid of ALL social messages in your inbox.
To top it all off, if you’re on the go and want to stay on top of your inbox, cleaning it on your mobile may not be as easy as doing it on desktop. To address these issues, the Clean Email app can step in and make the process more efficient.
When you use Clean Email’s Smart Folders, your social emails are automatically labeled and sorted as Social Notifications. From there it’ll be very easy to auto-delete all social emails in your Gmail — here’s how:
- Install the app on your iOS or Android device.
- Connect your Gmail account.
- Open the left-hand menu and scroll down to Smart Folders.
- Expand the dropdown and select Social notifications.
- Tap the Select button below or the circular icon next to any sender to choose one message bundle.
- Tap Select All.
- Tap Trash and confirm to move messages to the Trash folder, or tap More and select Delete to permanently remove them.

If you don't want to delete all social emails but only the read ones that are no longer relevant, doing this in Clean Email is also a breeze.

FAQs
Can deleting social emails free up Gmail storage?
Yes. Social emails often include images, previews, and attachments that take up storage space. Bulk deletion can noticeably free up your Gmail storage, especially if you have years of accumulated notifications.
Why do some social emails appear in the Primary inbox instead of Social?
Gmail’s categorization isn’t perfect. If you frequently open or reply to certain social emails, Gmail may treat them as important and move them to Primary. Sender formatting and email structure can also affect classification.
Is it safe to delete all social emails at once?
Generally yes, but it’s best to quickly scan for important messages like security alerts or account changes before bulk deletion. Once deleted and removed from Trash, they cannot be recovered.
Do deleted social emails affect my social media accounts?
No. Deleting emails in Gmail does not impact your accounts on platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn. It only removes the notifications from your inbox.
What’s the difference between archiving and deleting social emails?
Archiving removes emails from your inbox but keeps them searchable. Deleting moves them to Trash and eventually removes them permanently, freeing up storage.
