Limitation: While the Gmail app does let you select all emails, it only works for the ones currently visible, meaning you’ll need to keep scrolling to load more.

For example, to bulk delete email messages under one label (or a category like “Promotions” or “Social”):

  1. Launch the Gmail app on your iPhone or Android device.
  2. Navigate to the desired label or category.
  3. Tap the circular icon next to any email to select it.
  4. Tap Select all to choose the first 50 emails on the screen.
  5. Scroll down to load all emails under this label or category, then tap Select all again.

When Gmail’s Limits Become Frustrating

Unless you’re somewhat tech-savvy and know how to manually enter search operators, and especially if you are experiencing issues with deleting Gmail emails, it will take you ages to clear the nearly 2 GB worth of old emails in your inbox.

Native Gmail bulk deletion has some limitations:

If you need to combine multiple criteria visually or delete thousands of emails instantly without manual selection, more advanced tools may simplify the process.

Troubleshooting: Common Issues

Sometimes mass deletion doesn’t work as expected. Here are the most common problems:

Only the first page gets deleted

Gmail initially selects only the emails visible on the current page. Make sure to click the option to select all conversations matching your search.

The “Select all conversations” link doesn’t appear

This can happen if the search is too broad. Narrow it down using filters like older_than: or from:.

Deleted emails still take up storage

Messages moved to Trash are not permanently removed until you empty the Trash folder.

Important emails were deleted by mistake

Always review your selection before deleting, or consider archiving instead of removing.

Gmail won’t delete everything at once

Google may limit bulk actions, so you may need to erase emails in smaller batches.

Create Gmail Filters to Bulk Delete Automatically

If you regularly receive unwanted emails, you can automate deletion.

To create a Gmail filter:

  1. Click the filter icon in the search bar.
  2. Enter criteria (sender, keywords, size, etc.).
  3. Click Create filter.
  4. Select Delete it.
  5. Click Create filter again.

Now matching incoming emails will automatically go to Trash.

💡 Note: Gmail filters can only be created on desktop.

If you need more advanced rule-based cleanup or want to manage automatic deletion on mobile, Clean Email’s Auto Clean feature allows you to create similar rules with broader filtering options and easier control.
